Warning via smart street lights

What are smart street lights?

Smart street lights are street lights that serve as a light source and also fulfil an additional function: Equipped with a siren and a loudspeaker, they are also suited to warn the population.

Pilot project on the use of smart street lights

In order to determine whether smart street lights equipped with an electric horn siren and loudspeaker function are suitable for warning purposes, we have tested them in practice in a pilot project in Kaiserslautern.

The technical and social science study conducted in 2021 together with the Land of Rhineland-Palatinate and the City of Kaiserslautern shows that the light poles equipped with sirens are suitable for the local output of the siren signals “warning” and “all-clear” used in Germany and are accepted as warning devices.

Optimisation is only required for the recommendations for action issued via loudspeakers in addition to the siren signals. In order to make it easier to understand the recommendation, it is important to critically examine the extent of a voice output.

Objective of the pilot project:
Provision of existing street lights with warning technology and assessment of the efficiency and the warning effectiveness by means of a social science and technical evaluation.
